Statement of Intent
At Worthinghead Primary School it is our intention to provide a rich and exciting Science Curriculum that encourages children to be curious about the world around them and approach unknown phenomenon with awe and wonder.
We are committed to providing a stimulating, challenging and broad science curriculum that ensures full coverage of the National Curriculum. Through the teaching of the specific scientific subject knowledge in every year group, our children build upon their prior learning and add to their scientific vocabulary from previous year groups to further understand the world they are growing up in. Alongside this knowledge we teach our children the scientific skills they need to investigate practically, research, observe, enquire and ask questions about how things work and why things happen in certain ways.
Our aim is for our children to leave Worthinghead equipped with the scientific skills and knowledge needed to be creative thinkers and adults who strive to seek solutions to problems and answers to life’s questions.
Science learning outside our school:
At Worthinghead we are inquisitive and enthusiastic scientists. We love working scientifically by taking part in practical enquiries but we are also keen on researching different topics to increase our knowledge and understanding of the world around us. Our learning journey begins in Foundation Stage where lots of hands-on experimentation takes place. We spend lots of time in the Greenwood, our amazing outdoor woodland area, where we can really experience the natural world first hand.
We are very fortunate at Worthinghead to have great science links with our local community. Children from our Year 5 and 6 classes visit Nufarm in Wyke and Solenis in Low Moor on an annual basis. At Nufarm, we find out about the kind of products that are made in this very local chemical factory, have a site tour in a mini bus and visit the bottling plant. At Solenis, we spend the morning in the 'Kids' Lab' conducting experiments (wearing our PPE of course) and have a tour of the site and warehouse.
