Statement of Intent
At Worthinghead, we aim to provide our children with a high quality history education and a coherent knowledge and understanding of Britain’s past and that of the wider world.
Children are given opportunities to ask perceptive questions, think critically, weigh evidence, sift arguments, and develop perspective and judgement.
Children reflect on the complexity of people’s lives, the process of change, and the diversity of societies.
All children should know and understand the history of these islands as a coherent and chronological narrative from the earliest times to the present day. They should know how people’s lives have shaped this nation and how Britain has influenced and been influenced by the wider world.
Children learn about ancient civilisations, the expansion and dissolution of empires, and the achievements and follies of mankind. Historical concepts, such as continuity and change, cause and consequence, similarity and differences, are developed. Children use these to make connections, draw contrasts, analyse trends and ask questions.
Through history lessons, children provide structured accounts of their learning, including written narratives and analyses.
We encourage children to develop methods of historical enquiry, including how evidence is used rigorously to make historical claims. Children reflect on how and why contrasting arguments and interpretations of the past have been constructed. They place their growing knowledge into different contexts and make connections between local, regional, national and international history.
We explore cultural, economic, military, political, religious and social history on a short and long term the scale.
